Image Credits and Licences
The generator itself ships no images — it is eleven word lists and a reroll button. The reference board is the only place photographs appear, and every one of them comes from Wikimedia Commons.
Where the pictures come from
When you press Load reference pictures, the page queries the Wikimedia Commons API for each animal named in your roll and shows the first bitmap result. The query runs from your browser, on demand — nothing is bundled, cached on a server, or re-hosted.
Each tile carries three things: the part it illustrates, the photographer or author as recorded on Commons, and the licence short name. Where Commons records no author, the tile says so rather than inventing one.
Licences you will see
Most photographs on Commons are published under a Creative Commons licence or are in the public domain. Both allow reuse with conditions; the common ones are:
- CC BY-SA — reuse allowed, including commercially, if you credit the author and share the result under the same licence.
- CC BY — reuse allowed with credit.
- CC0 / Public domain — no restrictions, no credit required (credit still given).
The licence shown on a tile is the one Commons records for that file. If you republish a tile, carry the author and licence with it.
Using the creatures themselves
The creatures are text generated in your browser from a word list, so there is no copyright in the roll and no watermark on the card you download — except the site name in the corner, which is there so people can find the tool that made it. Do what you like with what you make.
Something wrong with a credit, or you are the author of a picture and would rather it not appear? The source file link on each tile goes straight to the Commons page where it can be corrected or removed.
